Description
A Taghit desert tour is the easiest introduction to the Algerian Sahara, and Taghit itself is one of the most photogenic places in the country. The old ksar sits on a rocky outcrop, the palm grove runs along the wadi below it, and immediately behind rises a dune ridge of the Grand Erg Occidental. You can walk from your bed to the top of a dune in twenty minutes.
A short drive away are the rock engravings of the Zaouia region — cattle, giraffe and antelope carved when this was savannah, thousands of years before the desert arrived. They are less famous than the Tassili paintings among Algeria’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, but they are far easier to reach.
Who a Taghit desert tour suits
Four days makes this the easiest itinerary to add to a longer North African trip, or to a business visit to Algeria. It also works particularly well as a family route: walking distances are short, the accommodation is comfortable, and there is a dune to climb every evening.
It is equally the right choice if you are unsure whether desert travel is for you. You get the erg, the ksar, the palm grove and a night under the stars, without committing to a week of camps.
What the four days cover
Day 1. Arrival at Bechar, transfer to Taghit, and the dune ridge at sunset — the classic first evening.
Day 2. The old ksar, the palm grove and the wadi in the morning, then the rock engravings.
Day 3. A full day in the erg: dune driving, a camp lunch, and a night under the stars if you want one.
Day 4. Morning at leisure, then transfer to Bechar for departure.
