Description

A Hoggar Assekrem trek takes you into a Sahara most people never picture: not dunes, but volcanic. Black basalt, eroded lava plugs standing alone on the plain, and a scale that makes photographs difficult to read. From Tamanrasset the road climbs steadily, and the temperature drops with every hundred metres.

The centre of the itinerary is Assekrem, at roughly 2,700 metres, where Charles de Foucauld built a hermitage in 1911. Travellers walk up before dawn and wait. What follows — the light moving across a hundred kilometres of volcanic peaks — is the single most photographed moment in the Algerian Sahara, and it earns the reputation.

Why choose a Hoggar Assekrem trek

Because it is the opposite of what people expect from the desert. Nights are cold, the air is thin, the rock is black rather than gold, and the silence at altitude is different from the silence of an erg. Algeria holds seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, and while the Hoggar is not among them, it is the landscape that most surprises travellers who came for sand.

It also suits photographers particularly well: the light at 2,700 metres is clean, the horizons are enormous, and the sunrise window at Assekrem is genuinely worth the cold walk up.

What the seven days look like

Days 1–2. Arrival in Tamanrasset, acclimatisation to the altitude, and the Tuareg craft workshops and market of the town. Taking these two days seriously makes the rest of the week easier.

Days 3–5. Into the massif. Camps at the foot of the volcanic peaks, day walks among the lava formations, and the ascent to Assekrem for both sunrise and sunset.

Days 6–7. The guelta oases on the return route — permanent rock pools that hold water year-round — then Tamanrasset and departure.

Good to know before your Hoggar Assekrem trek

Altitude matters here. The walking is not technical, but thinner air makes it feel harder than the distances suggest. The two acclimatisation days at the start are not padding.

Cold nights. Nights at Assekrem are genuinely cold in winter — a proper sleeping bag is not optional, and neither is a warm jacket.

Season. October to April. Between May and September we do not operate in the deep south.

Who it suits. Travellers drawn to geology, photography and cold clear skies rather than classic dune scenery. Group size is capped between four and ten.
