Description

A Djanet Tassili tour is the only realistic way to reach the rock art of the Tassili n’Ajjer, and this eight-day expedition is our most complete version of it. The plateau has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1982, and it remains one of the least visited sites of its importance anywhere in the world.

It holds thousands of paintings and engravings spanning several millennia — herds of cattle where there is now only sand, hunters, dancers, and animals that left this region when the Sahara dried. Reaching them means walking. Vehicles stop at the base of the plateau; from there you climb, and for the following days you move on foot between camps among sandstone formations that wind has carved into shapes which look deliberately built.

Why book a guided Djanet Tassili tour

Three reasons, all practical. First, Algerian law requires an accredited guide at the rock art sites, and permits for the Illizi wilaya cannot be obtained by individuals. Second, the plateau has no marked paths, no water and no mobile coverage — navigation and logistics are the whole job. Third, we issue the invitation letter that lets you collect your visa on arrival at Djanet airport, which removes the consular process entirely.

Departures run from October to April. Between May and September the heat makes trekking on the plateau genuinely unsafe, and we do not operate.

What the eight days look like

Days 1–2. Arrival in Djanet, acclimatisation, and the first excursions into the surrounding dunes and the engraving sites within reach of town. This is also when equipment is checked and the group settles into desert rhythm.

Days 3–6. The trek onto the plateau itself. Camps are moved daily. Rock art sites are visited with an accredited guide, as the law requires. Nights are spent under the open sky or in Tuareg tents, with meals cooked on site over a fire.

Days 7–8. Descent from the plateau, a final day around Djanet for the market and the oasis, then departure.

Good to know before your Djanet Tassili tour

Cold nights. Between December and February, temperatures on the plateau fall to near freezing after dark. A proper sleeping bag is not optional, and a warm jacket matters more than you expect in a place you think of as hot.

No connectivity. There is no mobile coverage for most of the trek. Our team carries satellite communication for emergencies. Tell people at home to expect several days of silence — it is normal.

Fitness. Expect three to five hours of walking on trek days, over sand and rock, at an unhurried pace. No technical skill is required, but the route suits travellers comfortable with consecutive walking days and basic camp conditions.

Group size. Capped between four and ten travellers. Private departures run on any dates you choose.
