Description
An M’Zab Valley tour is the most accessible way into the Algerian Sahara, and this five-day route is our gentlest itinerary. The M’Zab has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1982 and, unlike most World Heritage sites, it is still fully inhabited.
The five fortified cities of the pentapolis were built from the eleventh century by the Mozabite community. Their architecture — compact, terraced, organised around a mosque that doubles as a fortress — influenced Le Corbusier directly. The second half of the itinerary crosses into El Bayadh, where the Saharan Atlas breaks into canyons, lakes and green oases that almost no visitor to Algeria reaches.
Why this M’Zab Valley tour works as a first Sahara trip
No trekking, short walking distances, and a proper bed every night except the canyon evening. Ghardaia has its own airport with direct flights from Algiers, so the logistics are simple. And the contrast between the disciplined geometry of the ksour and the raw canyon landscape two hundred kilometres west gives you two very different Saharas in five days.
Day by day
Day 1. Welcome at Ghardaia airport, transfer to a guesthouse in the palm grove. Dinner and overnight in Ghardaia.
Day 2. Guided visit of Beni Isguen and its open-cry auction market — one of the last of its kind — then the Sebseb dunes for sunset.
Day 3. The ksour of the pentapolis, El Atteuf or Melika, for the panorama over the valley. An afternoon quad session, then a Merdoum dinner: meat slow-cooked under hot sand.
Day 4. Across the Saharan Atlas to El Bayadh. Couscous lunch in the canyons, then the Brezina canyons, the old Ksar of Bent El Khas, the lake and the oases. Dinner at camp, night in El Bayadh.
Day 5. Breakfast, a final morning walk, and transfer to El Bayadh airport.

Good to know before your M’Zab Valley tour
Dress and etiquette. Beni Isguen is a conservative walled city with its own visiting rules, and photography is restricted in places. Your guide will brief you before entering.
Season. October to April. Summer daytime temperatures in Ghardaia make sightseeing unpleasant and the canyon section unsafe.
Who it suits. First-time visitors to Algeria, families, and travellers with limited time who still want a genuine desert experience. Group size four to twelve.
