Description
A Timimoun tour takes you to the one Saharan town that photographs differently every hour of the day. Timimoun is built entirely from red ochre earth, and the colour shifts as the sun moves. It sits on the rim of the Grand Erg Occidental, one of the two great sand seas of Algeria.
It is also the centre of a system that deserves far more attention than it gets: the foggaras. These are underground channels, dug by hand from the water table to the palm groves, some of them a thousand years old and still in daily use. The flow is split between families by a comb-shaped stone divider, according to rights established centuries ago. It is one of the most elegant pieces of pre-industrial engineering in North Africa.
What makes a Timimoun tour different
Most Sahara itineraries are about landscape. This one is about landscape and water — how a civilisation engineered permanence into a place that should not support it. Algeria’s UNESCO World Heritage sites get the attention, but the Gourara region around Timimoun holds a living tradition that is arguably rarer.
The region is also where the Ahellil is still sung — a collective poetry and music form recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. If your dates coincide with a gathering, your guide will tell you.
What the six days cover
Days 1–2. Arrival in Timimoun, the ochre old town and its arcaded streets, the palm groves, and the foggara system explained on site by someone who grew up with it.
Days 3–4. Into the Grand Erg Occidental. Dune driving, a night camped in the sand sea, and the abandoned ksour of the Gourara — villages left behind when the water moved.
Days 5–6. The oasis chain and the salt lakes, then departure.

Good to know before your Timimoun tour
Getting there. Timimoun is reached by internal flight or by a long road transfer. We will advise which makes sense for your itinerary and dates.
Physical demand is low. The dune sections involve sand driving rather than walking, so this route suits travellers who want the erg without a trek.
For photographers. The best light on the ochre architecture is the hour after sunrise. Ask us to build the itinerary around it — we do this regularly.
Season. October to April, group size four to twelve. Private departures available on any dates.
